Your Body Knows How to Heal.
There is a deeper intelligence within us that existed long before we learned how to think our way through life. It’s called our Spirit; our deeper essence and pure light connected to the source of life and is what animates our existence.
This deeper essence is always present, yet when life becomes overwhelming our awareness shifts away from it, drawn to the pull of the rational mind.
In moments of overwhelm, the cognitive mind steps in to make meaning; doing the best it can from a place of protection and limitation. This is the mind that analyses, rationalises, and explains. It helps us survive what feels unbearable by creating understanding and structure. And yet, while this meaning-making can offer a sense of understanding, it is not the place from which natural regulation or real healing occurs.
Many healing traditions recognise another form of intelligent knowing that lives beyond the thinking mind. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shen refers to both mind and spirit, describing a unified intelligence that permeates the whole being. Shen is not confined to thought or logic; it is expressed through presence, vitality, emotional balance, and the felt sense of aliveness in the body.
This understanding is echoed in modern energy medicine. In her book Energy Medicine, Donna Eden describes how the body is animated and organised by electrical, electromagnetic, and more subtle energies, and that these energies form the foundation of health. When they flow freely, the body naturally moves toward balance; when they are blocked or disrupted, symptoms and dysregulation arise.
Similarly, in The BodyTalk System, John Veltheim explains that the body’s energies are not only intelligent, but responsive; capable of being engaged in dialogue that supports healing and restores coherence. This perspective invites a shift away from fixing or forcing the body, and toward listening to, and being in relationship with the body.
This is what I refer to as the Spirit Mind; the whole-system intelligence of body, energy, and awareness working together. I have learned that when internal safety is restored, this deeper inner knowing naturally comes online. The body no longer needs to organise itself around protection, and blocked energy begins to move toward health. Regulation unfolds naturally and gently, guided by the system’s own wisdom.
The body does not need to be told how to heal.
It already knows.
And when we learn to listen (with presence rather than analysis) the body–mind–spirit system remembers its way back to balance.
